I met Nicola soon after meeting Dónal. Well, they are married! I think the first time I heard them both playing together was at a session in the Catacol Bay Hotel and I played with them at sessions quite regularly after that. We did a few gigs together around pubs and hotels, including a few Hogmanay gigs. When Nicola and Dónal took on Fiddlers’ in Brodick in early 2014, they joined me for my regular weekly gig and we became North Country Winters. Nicola started out playing percussion and singing with the Winters, but in November 2014 she got an upright bass for her birthday and took to it like a duck to water and made a huge difference to the band’s sound. She has a great love of bluegrass and a really good knack of selecting great songs for the band. She plays percussion with the Arran Ceilidh Band, as well as singing lead and harmony. Oh, and she’s a bloomin’ good dancer and choreographer!
