SCGC Vintage Artist, Gillian Welsh version of the song.
Grey Ghost Sitka
My SCGC Vintage Artist has a ‘Grey Ghost’ sitka spruce top. I remember reading about this back on the original SCGC Players’ Forum, of which I was moderator at the time. Richard Hoover posted pictures and this message:
Richard’s Notes: This block o’ Spruce below is from the “Gray Ghost” a standing tree, dead for decades, that we acquired in the North West. Over this amount of time the resins have crystallized making it stunningly resonant. Almost like cheating. This Spruce is the best sounding Sitka ever. Like having been stored in the barn over fifty years. I’ll tell more of the story when the other pictures come in.
The forum crashed at one point and a lot of original posts were lost, including any reference to Gray/Grey Ghost or Silver Ghost sitka.
Google is revealing very little and all I kept from the time was the image and Richard’s notes, and a PDF print of a forum page from the old forum:
All I’ve found is this Guitar at Dream Guitars, built by Kevin Chubbuck, a luthier with experience at SCGC:

Kevin Chubbuck is a new name in the custom guitar world, but he comes to us with wonderful experience garnered at Santa Cruz Guitars and at Bill Tippin Guitars, where he still works with Bill crafting some of the finest guitars available today. This gorgeous guitar features a rare ‘Grey Ghost’ Sitka Spruce top harvested from a standing dead tree in Washington State by John Wagner. This top is full of silky Medullary rays indicating it is perfectly quarter sawn and special.
All I can tell you is that it’s a phenomenal guitar!
